Skinny Turkey 'Pigs in a Blanket'

I'm not the world's biggest football fan. Okay, not a fan at all. But, I love my Longhorns (Hook'em!) and I adore the Superbowl, though If I'm being honest... it's mostly for the commercials, camaraderie, and food! Yes, yes, yes! I love, love, love game day food! I couldn't tell you exactly why either, but I think it has something to do with the fact that it's all snackable little bites of finger foods.

There's just something really awesome about eating tiny food. Maybe that's the girl in me. Or... the kid in me.

Anyway, every year when the big game rolls around I always love to try my hand at healthifying and/or making traditional game day foods both skinny and delicious.

Today, I'm going with 'pigs in a blanket' which of course is usually made using little pork sausages; giving them the 'pig' in 'pigs in a blanket'. However, turkey sausages are healthier and have a lot less fat and calories to them.

So does that make these... 'gobblers in blankets' or... 'turkey in blankets'?

Can you tell that I wrestled around with the name of this recipe for a while?

I didn't just want to wrap those sausages in dough though, oh no. I wanted to wrap them and coat them with a few gourmet style toppings.

First, I picked the poppy seeds, because you know... poppy seed buns. Second, I went with sesame seeds... for the same reason as the poppy seeds. Last, but certainly not least, I mixed up some parmesan, garlic, and crushed rosemary because it's one of my most favorite combinations in the world.

I also left a few of them plain for those that aren't as adventurous as the rest of us when it comes to their 'pigs in a blanket'.

These are great for a fun little lunch or as an appetizer or party food for nearly any occasion. Plus, I feel like the added toppings make them a little more high end and appealing to adults without adding much time or effort in.

Feel free to be adventurous with the dips too! A chipotle aioli, truffle ketchup, or honey mustard would be super amazing with these little gobblers.

Just be forewarned. These go fast in a party style situation so you may want to double up on the recipe if you've got a mass to feed!

The Skinny:
Servings: 40 • Size: 1 'Pig in a Blanket' • Calories: 59 • Fat: 3.1 g • Carb: 6.1 g • Fiber: 0.1 g • Protein: 2.7 g • Sugar: 0.9 g • Sodium: 190.8 mg

Ingredients:
Pigs in Blankets:
14 Oz. (About 40) Mini Turkey Sausages (Such as Lil' Smokies.)
2 (8 oz.) Cans Refrigerated Reduced Fat Crescent Roll Dough

Toppings:
2 Tbsp. Poppy Seeds
2 Tbsp. Sesame Seeds (I used half black and half white.)
1 1/2 Tbsp. Dry Grated Parmesan Cheese
2 1/2 Tsp. Crushed Rosemary
1/2 Tsp. Garlic Powder

Directions:
Preheat the oven the dough package directions and line a baking sheet with foil; set aside.

My oven was 400 degrees F.

Prepare your toppings in three small bowls.

Add the poppy seeds to the first bowl and the sesame seeds to the second. In the third bowl, combine the cheese, rosemary, and garlic powder.

Remove the dough from the container and unroll it. Press the seams together as best you can since we won't be using those guides.

Cut the dough of each can out into 20 equal strips (giving you 40 strips of dough all together.)

I used a pizza cutter since it's much easier to use here than a knife!

Wrap one strip around each little turkey sausage.

Toss each prepared sausage into one of the toppings to coat the entire uncooked part of the dough fully.

I did ten wrapped sausages in each topping flavor, leaving the remaining ten plain for my little one.

Line the sausages up on the prepared baking sheet and place it in the oven to bake according to package directions.

I baked mine for 15 minutes.

Once done, remove the pan from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.

Enjoy warm right away or as an appetizer during the big game!

They are also great for any tailgate or homegate style party.

I actually served mine as lunch with a side salad, a couple of little pickles and some ketchup and mustard for dipping!

If you have any leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge.

I prefer these being reheated in the oven, but the microwave would work as well.
